How accessible or inclusive is your workplace… Really?

An extensive new study by three world-leading authorities lays bare the unsettling truth; and it may not make easy reading for many business leaders or HR departments.

(Neuro Diverse = ND)

“I have some staggering stats to share with you about the neurodivergent experience in the workplace:

👉 55% of ND employees are concerned about disclosing due to fear of discrimination from their colleagues.

👉 41% of our ‘ND at Work’ survey respondents said there was a lack of knowledgeable of supportive staff in the workplace.

👉 All – yes, ALL – ND employees reported low levels of well-being, and 1 in 3 report problems with sleep.

Founder and CEO of Neurodiversity in Business (Charity)

The above shocking statistics were taken from the ‘Neurodiversity at Work 2023, Demand, Supply and a Gap Analysis‘ report of Birkbeck University London written by
Professor Almuth McDowall C.Psychol.
Professor Nancy Doyle C.Psychol.

At Ocean 3D, we task everyone reading this post to take a few minutes to download and study this report. With over 1,000 people surveyed, the responses and results need to be taken seriously and may be a serious eye-opener for many working in HR, marketing and management.

We also recommend that this study* is viewed in conjunction with the legal opinion on the provision of ancillary aids and reasonable adjustments, by Louise Mankau of Internationally renowned human rights and employment Law barristers Doughty Street Chambers.

People with hidden conditions need the same basic and reasonable consideration/ adjustments and care as everyone else but, bluntly, often aren’t receiving it.

Inclusion and accessibility doesn’t need to mean special days, face-painting or flags (not everyone wants to draw attention to their individuality, and others may resent having it forced upon them), it simply means respect, empathy and a little extra thought. It needn’t and often doesn’t cost anything to do either.

The social, physical and mental benefits for everyone (productivity/ profits too) when we do get it right, are huge!

*The ability to journey and destination plan, should it be a reasonable adjustment under the Equality Act?
